If you haven’t already, you can also consult the first part of this analysis, where I give you 11 more reasons why Deacon Frost and Euron Greyjoy seem to be awfully similar (whether it be intentional or unintentional on George R. R. Martin’s part).
Martin seems to have a liking for dark fictional characters as he both likes to write them and has either talked about his liking for brilliantly dark dramas like I, Claudius, Richard III etc., or made their influences rather obvious (like in the instance of Lovecraft and his Old Gods which are representatives of bone-chilling nihilism). Martin does also like to mix in some purely historical elements as well (the Mongols (Dothraki), Cromwell (Lord Protector), Alexander the Great (Dany as the young, unlikely genius conqueror)) but usually they do seem to come from some fictional filter first (i.e. Richard III which happens in the aftermath of the historical War of the Roses)). But was Martin influenced also by Marvel?
Well, why not? I’ve talked about the probable influence Thor: Vikings (2008) had on Martin, and that’s a Marvel property too. Martin likes truly scary, convincingly dark characters, and Blade’s (1998) vampire Deacon Frost is quite a startlingly dark character, once you think about his actions in this movie. He’s a nihilistic mass-murderer, wants world domination, wants to become a God, is promiscuous, incestuous, does vampire sacrifice and black magic, would kill his own kind readily… His is a kind of quiet, not so obvious, but deep, deep evil and even madness. Just like Euron? Well, without further ado, let’s just continue our list:
12. THEY BOTH ARE DRUNK (ON DRUGS) ALL THE TIME
Euron drinks nightshade. Deacon drinks blood. Both seem to have drug-like effects despite both being liquids. Just look at the vampire’s reaction in the nightclub scene at the beginning of Blade, and of course Euron has his visions when drinking nightshade, which is its well-known effect…
Also, nightshade’s description is a bit similar to blood, being all thick and darker than wine… And nightshade leaves your lips “bruised”, just like perhaps…

13. THEY ARE BOTH AMBITIOUS ENTREPENEURS AND CHARISMATIC VISIONARIES WHO WANT THE WORLD
It is kind of glossed-over in the movie, but Deacon Frost has many ambitious projects going on at the same time. He runs his vastly popular night clubs for vampires which feature showers of (human) blood from freshly squeezed people. You might think this is something of a regular occurrence in the Blade world, but it is hinted Deacon is actually the one who came up with the idea and is the clubs’ main manager (you can see him walking through the club at the very beginning of the movie).
And he does this not only because he is a sadist completely certain of his own supremacy but because he is also a politician who seems keen on winning the popular vote, and is wildly, even insanely ambitious. He then also dabbles in magic, history, archaeology, ancient languages. His men respect and fear him, but he is also sought-after company.
Compare this to Euron who also knows how to win the political game and get rid of his political opponents (getting rid of Victarion, Euron, Asha (just like Deacon kills his political rival Dragonetti), but then has magical world domination plans involving a lot of factors and people, has travelled and pillaged all over the world. He is also respected and feared, but also admired and liked, especially with his “smiling eye” and “showering” his men with treasures.
14. THEY ARE BOTH (OR GOING TO BE) UNDEAD
Deacon is, of course, an ‘undead’ vampire (even though in the Blade universe vampirism is a virus and you can cure it). I have talked about how Euron most likely is going to become an undead zombie. Others have suggested that he already might be one (getting possessed in Valyria).
15. THEY BOTH (WILL) LEAD THEIR COMPANIONS TO DOOM
Connected with number 14, in Deacon’s case, because of his ambition to become the blood god La Magra, every single one of his associates is dead. In “The Forsaken” Aeron curses both Euron and his crew, but it might be Euron’s own magic that seals the deal and makes them all ‘the forsaken’…
16. BLADE’S ALTERNATIVE ENDING – THE ONE WHERE FROST KIND OF LOSES HIMSELF
In Blade’s alternative ending, La Magra is literally a storm of blood. Deacon Frost as a person doesn’t really exist anymore, at least not in the same form. If Euron wants to perhaps become Azor Ahai or something similar (like the Bloodstone Emperor – again with the blood) he might just lose himself like that one character at the end of Tad Williams’ Memory Sorrow and Thorn…
17. IF EURON ALLIES HIMSELF WITH THE OTHERS, AND THE SIDE OF ICE, WAS AN ADDITIONAL HINT FOR THIS IN FROST’S NAME?
Deacon Frost’s surname is Frost. And ‘frost’ is kind of similar to ‘ice’, like in A Song of Ice and Fire. If Euron does receive some kind of a magical upgrade for the final war between Fire and Ice, I would bet you it would be on the side of Ice. He is already textually connected with Bloodraven’s crows (again with the blood) with his Crow’s eye and his dreams of flying (reminiscent of Bran’s own dreams), and one beautiful textual analysis from LuciferMeansLightbringer brings to the forefront all those ‘others’ that seem to be following Euron…
But in the case of Euron, we just have to wait and see…
