EURON GREYJOY (ASOIAF) AND DEACON FROST (“BLADE” 1998) – 17 REASONS WHY THEY ARE THE SAME PERSON (PART 1/2)

The blood god’s coming… He’s a hurricane, an act of God. Anyone caught in his path will instantly be turned. (…) How you gonna cure the whole fucking world?”

Deacon Frost about himself, Blade (1998)

I am the storm, my lord. The first storm, and the last.”

“…A tall and twisted thing with one black eye and ten long arms sailing on a sea of blood

Moqorro, most likely on Euron Greyjoy, in A Dance With Dragons

I’ve talked about the probable influences on the conception of Euron’s character in the ASOIAF books here and here, but neither of those influences foreshadow Euron’s probable massive blood sacrifice the preparations for which he seems to be making in The Winds of Winter’s chapter “Forsaken”. True, we have this in Thor: Vikings:

But that is pretty much it. Of course, in Martin’s world blood is tied to magic, that is, blood sacrifice, so it makes sense that Euron deals with blood, and seemingly massive amounts of it, when trying to perform something big, as any other sorcerer in this world would be.

Now, in accordance with his perhaps less effectual, but still scary another probable inspiration, I, Claudius’ Caligula, Euron wants to become a god. There have been some speculation in the fandom that a massive blood sacrifice will help him achieve his apotheosis (or just turn him into a zombie as in Thor: Vikings) or some combination of the two. While this aspect of Euron’s character might also be inspired by Tad Williams’s Ineluki (and Ineluki by Tolkien’s Fëanor), it also kind of aligns perfectly with the vampire Deacon Frost’s plan in the first Blade movie. And, actually, after thinking about it some more, Deacon and Euron do share quite a few (intentional or unintentional, who would know?) similarities, so that I’ve decided to make a giant list articulating every one of them.

1. THEY BOTH COMPARE THEIR GOODHOOD AND THE RESULTING APOCALYPSES TO ‘STORMS’

You can see it from the quotes above. Deacon says: “The blood god’s coming… He’s a hurricane, an act of God. Anyone caught in his path will instantly be turned. (…) How you gonna cure the whole fucking world?”, while Euron says: “I am the storm, my lord. The first storm, and the last.”

We know in the Blade movie that Deacon wants to turn the population of the whole world into vampires, and in that way bring the apocalypse. We don’t really know what Euron wants but it might be, judging by his similarities to both the undead vampire Deacon, and the undead zombies from Thor: Vikings that he plans something similar – his ascension but also the end of the world perhaps in the form of an unstoppable undead (zombie) army (it would at least explain “the last storm” part of his quote).

2. THEY BOTH PLAN TO BECOME GODS (TO BE DETERMINED IN EURON’S CASE) THROUGH BLOOD SACRIFICE

In “The Forsaken”, Euron says to Aeron: “No, I’ll not kill you tonight. A holy man with holy blood. I may have need of that that blood … later. For now, you are condemned to live.” Euron collected priests of other religions as well, probably to be sacrificed in the right moment. Deacon, in a blood ritual, drains Blade of his blood, and takes the souls of 12 pureblood vampires to make himself a god.

3. THEY BOTH TALK ABOUT THEIR ‘ASCENDEND’ SELVES IN THE THIRD PERSON

Deacon says: “The blood god’s coming… He‘s a hurricane, an act of God. Anyone caught in his path will instantly be turned.” The “he” he is talking about refers to the blood god, but also to Deacon himself as the blood god. In The Feast for Crows Euron has this bit: ” (…) No, to make an heir that’s worthy of him, I need a different woman. When the kraken weds the dragon, brother, let all the world beware.” Euron is here probably talking about himself, after his ascension.

4. THEY ARE BOTH INTERESTED IN ANCIENT MAGIC

Euron is interested in nightshade induced visions, might be a skinchanger, is getting ready to perform some blood ritual, has visited Ancient Valyria and holds actual warlocks (who we know from previous books, can perform magic) as his slaves. Deacon translates an ancient text which describes a magical vampire blood ritual. Other vampires consider these ancient texts “fairytales for little vampires”, just like some Ironborn don’t believe Euron has actually visited Valyria, a place said to be extremely cursed.

5. THEY BOTH DISCOVER A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN/INACCESSIBLE ARHEOLOGICAL LOCATION WHICH ENPOWERS THEM

Deacon led a giant operation to dig out the remains of an ancient vampiric temple. He says about this temple: “Our ancestors called this place the Temple of Eternal Night. Nice, isn’t it? Apparently, these geniuses forgot it ever existed. Fortunately for us… I’m what you might call a student of history. (…) This temple was built for one glorious moment: This night, for the blood god.” Similarly to this, Euron talks about having visited Ancient Valyria, and might have found his Valyrian steel armor there (described in “The Forsaken”). Also, if he is going to Old Town, as other fans have predicted, he will try to do his ascension there, as Old Town is an ancient, probably magical place.

6. THEY WOULD BOTH KILL (OR TRY TO KILL) A PREGNANT WOMAN

Deacon Frost bit Blade’s mother when she was heavily pregnant with Blade. Euron impregnates Falia Flowers, and ties her naked, visibly pregnant and without a tongue on the figurehead of his ship. He is probably going to sacrifice her and the child she carries for his blood magic.

7. THEY WOULD SACRIFICE THEIR CHILD FOR THEIR OWN GODHOOD

Deacon takes all of Blade’s blood for his ascension ritual, believing he has killed him. Blade is, in a sense, his son, as he gets his vampiric characteristics from Frost. Again, Euron plans to sacrifice his unborn child to make himself a god.

8. THEY ARE BOTH KINSLAYERS

Deacon kills other vampires which is taboo in the vampire world of the first Blade movie (not so much in the second, tough), not to mention he tried to kill Blade, his son. Euron killed three of his brothers, plans to kill another two (Aeron and Victarion), and plans to kill his unborn child.

9. THEY ARE BOTH INCESTUOUS

We learn in “The Forsaken” chapter of TWOW that Euron raped two of his younger brothers, Aeron and Urrigon, when they were children. Deacon sleeps with the vampires he sires (most evidently, Blade’s mother who we know he’d bit). He offers to turn Blade’s friend Karen, while obviously also being sexually interested. He also could have sired his blond-henchman with whom he is lovers, and even his male henchman Quinn who is hinted to be gay.

10. THEY ARE BOTH PROMISCUOUS

Euron brags about raping a lot of women, but also doesn’t seem to have a problem getting consensual sex as well. Deacon has at least two willing female lovers at the same time, and also planned to have a third (Karen).

11. THEY BOTH HAVE (A) LIGHT BLUE EYE(S) AND A BLOOD EYE(S) THAT IS “HIDDEN”

Euron seems to have a genetic condition called heterochromia that makes your eyes a different colour. Euron hides this condition with an eye-patch. We are led to believe in The Feast for Crows that this eye is “black”, but these are Aeron’s thoughts on Euron in TWOT “The Forsaken”: “He showed the world his blood eye now, dark and terrible.” Euron’s eye is not black but dark-red. Euron’s new banner also features this “blood eye”:

All of this is, of course, reminiscent of Deacon’s transformation into La Magra (the Blood God):

But also of his hidden nature as a vampire, as well as his blood-thirsty plan to turn the whole world into vampires, therefore the “hidden” blood eye, signifying his ‘bloody’ intentions.

Will be continued, hopefully tomorrow in Part 2…
